Through Design Technology, children will:
- Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to participate in an increasingly technological world
- Build and apply a broad repertoire of knowledge and skills in order to design and make prototypes and products for a range of users
- Understand the properties of different materials and consider these when designing for a purpose
- Test, discuss and evaluate their own ideas and products, and those of others
- Apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook
Design Technology, when possible, will be linked to the learning carried out in each nodal point but will, if necessary, stand alone in order to maintain its disciplinary rigour. Children will follow the design and make process detailed here in order to ensure they are building the skills and understanding required of confident designers and technicians in today’s, and tomorrow’s, world. Pupils will research and evaluate existing products, think creatively to design their own products while considering the requirements of the user and of mass production and build practical skills through modeling and practice before applying these processes to their own prototypes and products.
In addition to their DT units of work, children will take part in STEM challenges, working collaboratively across year groups.
